Day 1 Food Trail October 2013: Ipoh to Penang

  1. Ipoh Hor Fun, Caramel Custard, Pork Satay @ Thean Chun Restaurant,Ipoh Old Town.
  2. Cronuts at Rasa Deli, Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa (Penang)
  3. Chimney Bread @Kurtos Spiroll, Gurney Paragon (Penang)
  4. Charlie Brown Cafe, Straits Quay (Penang)
  5. Asiatique, Vantage Point (Penang)
For your "easy" ready purpose, I've noted down the food pictures & restaurants/cafe that you would find in this blogpost :-D (I'm so kind, I know...)

Life is difficult & sucks when you are working for someone else's dream other than your own, so I find solace in singing, dancing, shopping and YES! eating!!! After every shitty work week (same sh*t, different week), I always look forward for some fun "adventures" during the weekend.

Last weekend was no different, J, Calvin & I headed for a road trip and mini food hunt in the north.

Usually (on other roadtrips), we would start our journey after we're done "sleeping in" at around 10am. But this time to avoid jam and to ensure that we are able to tick off our "food-to-eat" list (more like me, coz I was the one who made the schedule. A perfect schedule I must say :-D), we started our journey at 8am.

We reached Ipoh before 10am. I was worried that the coffeeshop would run out of Creme Caramel a.k.a "tan dan" in Cantonese as I read from other blogs that they often run out before 10am *gasps*
But thank god it was still available!!! Calvin who is from Kampar but often travels to Ipoh to eat kept on assuring me in the car that they would still have it till around noon. It was so good that I had to have T-W-O!!! As good as the ones you can find in fine dining restaurants/hotels and only 1/10 of the price!!!
Ordered pork satay too with innards but too bland for my liking though it has more meat (per stick) compared to the ones I've had in Malacca though the Malacca ones are tastier.
Also had the Ipoh shredded chicken hor fun noodles too. Not too bad. Finished the soup and condiments but couldn't finish the noodles as I was full from the delicious creme caramel *guilty smile*
Don't even tell anyone that you've been on a food trip to Ipoh if you have not savour on Ipoh's famous juicy and "fat" bean sprout.

Cronuts at Rasa Deli, Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa
I've heard/seen so much on croughnuts/cronuts/kronuts via instagram, facebook & blogs...The spelling varies coz apparently the original name has been copyrighted.
Was looking forward to try it in Bangkok but was delighted when I found out they had it too in Penang.
But you need to be quick. It is only available between 3-4pm daily and only 100 pieces are sold per day. Costumers are advised to consume the cronuts they purchase within 2 hours to retain it's freshness. Forget about buying it and bringing it back to KL :-P
Apparently, the chocolate brownie is the bestseller!

Nutella Banana was another one of my favorite too!
My least favourite. Too tangy for my liking.

Six flavours. First in Penang! Prices as per the picture above :-)

We requested it to be cut into 4 so that we can share amongst ourselves :-)
Closer look
Shape of a doughnut and texture of a croissant. Hence the name  Cronut!

Obligatory Penang Beach touristy picture ftw!!!

Touristy beach wear like wedges, cute shorts, swimwear (for beach/island destinations) is a must have for a self-confessed wanderlust. Get your travel essentials by shopping online with Zalora Malaysia.

We then headed to Gurney Paragon for a bit to check out the new mall.

Chimney Bread @Kurtos Spiroll, Gurney Paragon
I first spotted this chimney bread when I was living in Auckland, New Zealand. It was sold by this Hungarian Family at the Pakuranga Night Market but I never had the chance to taste it.

It comes with a selection of flavours-chocolate, etc...but we opted for the original one and added on butterscotch to dip in. Quite yummy and addictive I must say. But unfortunately I'm always on a low-carb diet so bread is a big no-no T__T...

(It's available in Queensbay Mall too!)

Charlie Brown Cafe, Straits Quay

Next, we headed to Charlie Brown Cafe! There are so many places in Penang that I haven't been too yet though in the past 3/4 months I've already been to Penang THRICE!
I could see that the owners had spent a lot of money renovating this novelty cafe. But unfortunately business was quite. One of the reason could possibly be because it was located at a quite secluded area.

Still an extremely adorable place nonetheless :-)

 Asiatique, Vantage Point
Fresh in-house baked bread that goes deliciously with the herb butter!
Last "food stop" for the day was at this new Australian Fusion restaurant called Asiatique. One of the reason why we travelled so far was to support our friend Aldrien (the owner & head chef of Asiatique).

Started of with a glass of cocktail called Virgin Lady which was specially made for me by their bartender (who according to Aldrien has won a few awards) coz you know...I'm special...not in a retarded way (I know what you're thinking! grrrr...)
Little Mouse for those who wants something strong & potent

Not being a prawn person, I was surprised when this Tempura Prawns dish turned out to be one of my favourite dish that night. Crispy prawns that goes really well with the sauce & noodles that came with it.

This spicy squid dish was loved but the majority. But I'm not a fan of spicy food unfortunately.

Loved this Pan seared scallops dish with chunky mashed pea, cumin foam and micro cress.

Signature twice cooked pork belly with roasted sweet potatoes and beetroots, poached bianco pears and pork juice

Duck Breast with warm mushroom and frisee salad, cream of dates, orange, ginger and honey vinaigrette, and yam noodles.

Pan Seared Salmon with cheesy braised leeks, tomato and ginger bud cream, and mint and cucumber foam.

Braised moroccan lamb shoulder with spiced nuts cous cous and pickled lemons.
Risotto with Fried potatoes
The waiter then surprised us with a shot of this drink...consisted of 4 layers but only recognised that one layer of it was Baileys...
*my up-to-no-good face*
Super hot on my lips after blowing off the fire. Hence, the expression.

But was pleased with the combination of the 4 layers of alcohol. Sweet & Rich, like how I like it :-D

Round 3: Lychee Martini :-D
Chocolate and walnut brownie

Tiramisu Cake
Spiced Dry Caramel Panna Cotta with almond tuile and country raspberry coulis.

Green tea creme brûlée

Only the 2nd Green Tea creme brulee that I have tasted so far. First was in Bakita at Changkat Bukit Bintang back in 2011.
